About Us

Welcome to Brandsma Farm.

We’re Kim & Bob Brandsma — and yes, our alpaca farm started as a tax break. Today it’s home to Sugar Pike Alpacas in Canton, Georgia.

How it started

A love story that began with a tax break.

Our journey into farming wasn’t the most romantic one — at first.

We are Kim Brandsma & Robert (Bob) Brandsma. Our journey into farming, goats, and alpacas was not the most romantic one. We were originally looking for a tax break, and someone said, “buy a farm.” But to qualify, it has to be a real working farm.

We’ve always loved animals, so we found a small farm that we loved — and then we had to decide what animals to put on it. So my husband researched Myotonic (fainting) goats while I researched alpacas. We bought 7 fainting goats first, and they are adorable!

Then we visited an alpaca farm in Virginia — and this is where our real love story began. We fell in love with the graceful beauty of the alpacas. The rest is history: our farm was born, and we brought home our first 7 female alpacas. It was so hard waiting for them to arrive — and shortly after, we purchased 6 more.

We started showing the alpacas and learning about fiber, breeding, and how to improve fleece using the tools available to breeders — EPDs, histograms, and genotyping. So many new things to learn! We now have several amazing herdsires available for stud service. (I’m still building their marketing pages, so hang in there.) Don’t hesitate to call or text me about one of our males — Kim, (678) 986-4225.

Who we are

Meet Kim & Bob.

Between us, we’ve had more than a few careers.

Bob Brandsma

The multi-faceted one.

Bob once owned and operated a Christmas tree farm in New Jersey, and today he owns a construction-utilities consulting company. His past lives include law enforcement, homicide detective, paramedic, truck driver, and electrician — a multi-faceted and talented fellow, to say the least.

Kim Brandsma

The lifelong farm girl.

Kim grew up living and working on a farm — though only with the usual cows, chickens, and pigs. Her past careers include paralegal and photographer, and since 2007 she’s been a licensed real estate agent who owns her own brokerage. She and Bob recently sold their Canton restaurant, The Union Hill Bar & Grill.

What’s next

Growing, season by season.

We’re just getting started.

We recently purchased additional attached land, which gives us room to add more alpaca housing — and a 5-bedroom farmhouse we plan to offer on Airbnb. Look for that soon.

This is an exciting business to be in. We look forward to getting to know and assist new alpaca breeders, and to continuing to mentor our previous clients. Once the new cria arrive — some in spring, some in fall — we’ll evaluate them and put some up for sale. We’ll sell some of our very best, because our goal is to improve fiber as much as possible for the industry while improving conformation for the show ring.

Looking forward to working with you! — Kim & Bob
